Open Schmopen, someone owns the license.
Just because an entity is open doesn't make it free from nefarous goals. Just like if something is proprietory it is automatically evil. You guys are morons or open source bigots. That entity could pull it's file format (stop supporting it) and build on it for proprietory reasons for the future. True, what is out there is grandfathered in, but the talent moved on. This causes a disruption within the standards body. Also any new technology may or may not be adopted leaving a superior solution barred from playing. If it is a threat to the larger members of the politburo, I will guarentee it will not be allowed to play. Remember standards are just a guideline. Not some tablet to observe 24/7.
