The bottom line.
The bottom line here is just that, the bottom line (on the financial statements). The record industry has never really done anything except exploit and brain-wash the artists. When you look at the fact that the labels pocket millions before the artists pocket any significant earning then you see my point. The record exec's are willing to do anything, even expose it's customer base to dangerous and potentually malicious software components, for the sake of protecting it's profit base.

In the mid to late 70's the group KISS was running hot. This is despite the fact the they only had a couple of tunes that actually made it to the top 10 list. KISS's bread and butter was there stage show. The point here is the fact that they did not rely heavily on album sales but concentrated on filling auditoriums and it paid off, big time. You can video record a concert but there is still nothing like being there.

Many artists are dismayed to find that there record label included DRM restrictions. And many artists openly use free downloads to spread their music to growing markets.

The record labels are archaic dinosaurs that need to be declared extinct and be replaced with anything else. The artists would prosper, the fans would have ways to get to their music (and be able to take it with them) and the rest of the world would not have to put up with record exec's who are willing to sell us all up the river (cyber-river) to crooks, spammers and hacks to protect their bottom line.
