Get 'em while they're young...

Probably as much to do with getting them hooked, locked and "trapped" into using Office (file formats) while they're young.

Sell at an affordable price for students and the average home user (vs business cost and use). Much as a drug pusher gives you free or cheap hits until you're addicted... then you pay thru the nose (so to speak).

IIRC, MS even ventured into talking children's toy bears (are they still being sold?)... hook them from crib to grave on the MS mindset

Talking toy bears
Video games (sw & hw)
Music/media
OS/Office suite
Tax/money apps

All age groups covered and you're MS's for life, or so they scheme and hope.
