The Student edition is the precursor of a low-priced home Office version.

Quoting:
In the case of Office, we have attacked that market with our Student and Teacher Edition. We will continue with Office 12; there will be news, over time, about where we are going with Student and Teacher Edition. But essentially, that edition targets the same market segment that we have been targeting with the Express Editions.

Enterprise and home versions of Windows and Office are going to get more and more different. The reason is that in order to "integrate everything else" Microsoft is going to have to include many functions for business that are not at all relevant to home users.

That will also assure that the price for home Windows need never exceed $50 to OEMs, which is why he said Windows is so cheap that no Starter edition is needed.


Microsoft's strategy can be understood, at least in part, by watching the lead-up to the company's major actions.
