While it did take me over three minutes to open up the sxc file Ou posted, part of that time was spent converting it to odt, then resizing row heights on 250,000+ rows, then recalculating. Why didn't he just post it as an odt directly, with no putzing around after the load, since all of the 13 columns were text data?
I also wondered why one would use a spreadsheet when a database was clearly called for?
Out of curiosity I converted Ou's spreadsheet into a database table (dbf) with 250,000+ rows, with 13 columns per row, and timed how long it took OOo2 to open it. Less than a second!! How long to navigate to the last row? Less than a second!! The rows flashed by at blink speed when I slide the right hand thumbwheel up and down.
When used in right way OOo is very fast. I have no doubt that if Ou used Access instead of Excel his data would open faster too.
A good craftsman uses the right tool for the job.
