Sun made big mistakes with Java.
For web, it has to be simple and easy to learn for average webpies. Java has bigger potential as standalone desktop GUI software development platform. Sun didn't see how Java can achieve the potential. Instead Sun fight with MS to ruin desktop potential and go after making bloated J2EE that will be replaced with PHP, eventually.
