Though client-side Java has always been dominant.
But the JVM is still a pig compared to a PHP processor Besides, PHP can be compiled for just about anything at will (it's open source); with Java, you're still at the mercy of Sun and its licensees, at least until the GNU implementation is further along. - Posted by: John L.
