Uncomparable
While both can be used server-side, Java is usually a client-side or stand alone technology - which gives it the ability to compete in markets where PHP can't.

Not to mention Java applications don't need to be tied to a browser at all - something AJAX can't claim. Many of the applications I use (NetBeans, jEdit, Art of Illusion, and the list goes on) are Java based, but have absolutely no connection to a browser.

"Macromedia's Flash format, which enables animation, sound, motion and other splashy features within browsers, also is on the list."

Has the author of this article seen some of the things people have done with Flash? I know I hate it, but I have to admit, people have created some pretty good stuff with Flash long before AJAX became a buzzword.

"Java and PHP compete at some level. Get over it,"

That's great, Mike - but guess what? At the end of the day, there's still no good AJAX-based competition for your prize product, Eclipse - which happens to be Java based . . .
