I have a relapsing remitting course of multiple sclerosis. As a partial result of it, I cannot use my hands well enough to make effective use of the keyboard or mouse. Speech recognition has proven to be the best way to enter information and control my computer. Unfortunately, this approach is not normally appropriate in public and group settings. And I have discovered that this method doesn't work well for me when I'm writing fiction (continuous technology control and medieval settings often do not mix). Happily (for me), I am still able to write legibly using a specially adapted pen or stylus. This makes a Tablet PC absolutely ideal, since it offers native and third-party handwriting recognition, as well as third-party speech recognition.

When something other than Windows will fill the bill, I'll be happy to look.
