You have to keep the PR releases going. If not, people may forget about your product and look elsewhere for alternatives. This "update to a beta" article lets people know/makes them think that Vista is that much closer to release so they may put off buying other technologies.

Other markets do the same thing. Game consoles are a prime example. Look at all the stuff Sony puts out about the PS3 in hopes of turning some people away from the X-Box 360 this holiday season.
