There is no fork, they are both based on the same code base.
Yes, SUN adds a few extras to StarOffice like extra fonts, a different spell checker, of course all of the SUN logos, etc, but still basically the same thing. Notice it is legal to link in their own code because OpenOffice is LGPL, not GPL.
