You can choose the browser and media player you want. Download firefox and real player (RP is just an example) and use them. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing that. There is no point in removing the other apps if you are going to download them anyway. You will need to go to that IE only site eventually, and if you want to play your wma or wmv files you'll need WMP. So they are actually doing you a favor by having it installed already.

I have not personally had a virus on my Windows system in years.

So you already know how to close the window so you don't get viruses. So its a moot point now.

If Microsoft would only open its kernel to be scanned I can only speculate where the numbers would be but from the number of security patches that are put out from Microsoft we can equally speculate why these numbers are not available.

Microsoft has its own scanning tools they use in-house.
