For the most part, you're right.
But I've had problems that only cleaning out registry entries can resolve.

I remember trying to get Works off a computer. The only thing that finally worked was a special tool sent to me by Microsoft support specifically designed to clean out registry entries from Microsoft products. That one made it necessary to reinstall another application or two, but at least what was left of Works wasn't keeping a later install of Word from starting.

Microsoft also provides the RegMaid registry cleaner for C++:

The RegMaid utility is designed to clean up invalid registry entries that are caused by deleting OLE projects that are created with Visual C++ and Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC).

Microsoft also issued good old Regclean.


And have you ever had problems with a driver install because of conflicts between newer and older registry entries?


Yes, much of the time, Windows would have cleaned out the "errors" found anyway. There's a certain amount of self-promotion in those applications. But sometimes cleaning out the registry does prevent problems.
