I can't say I've seen that with Linux or anything else
Actually I find Linux to much like Solaris but find Solaris better. But in any case I don't see any Unix like OS as brittle. I see Windows as brittle. It seems you need separate server for every app out there. Still I'm not so sure I'd blame Microsoft entirely for that and would put the lions share of the blame on 3rd party developers.
