May I step in?
What exactly are the "simple, engineering principles" you propose? We'd love to hear

Successful project management has always had some basic steps that work.

1. Clearly define the goals and lock them down once defined. (Not the constant, "can we add something else"?)

2. Clearly define "markers" to measure compliance with stated goals. (Time and money being top consideration.)

3. Set a realistic time frame and budget and then live by it.

4. Clearly set and communicate responsibilities and measure progress constantly.

5. And most importantly, let your best horses (coders?) pull the load without interfering with them or their efforts.
