Don't "compete" with open source

It didn't work for IBM, and it won't work for Microsoft. The low end of the stack stabilizes, then commoditizes. MS has been spectacularly successful charging exhorbitant prices for commodity software, but eventually the gravy train runs out. You have to move into the value arena.

I think Ballmer gets it. The interesting thing is that he is totally unembarassed about making any claim at any time (lower TCO, better than Websphere - haven't heard that claim ever, from anybody), whereas most of us would feel our nose growing. But he apparently knows he has to move the company up the value chain, but in the meantime keep pressing for the Longhorns and the Offices, to keep revenue flowing until the "new" MS emerges.

The problem with MS is like the boy who cried wolf. When can you start believing them?
