*sigh*
Methinks she's been away from the world of "hands on" and has refreshed herself from a couple of magazine stories written by those who know how to put technical words together but largely do not understand the technical details they are writing about.

She's writing about the overhead of storing flat data in a relational database. Big deal. Has she never learned a network database can function as a hierarchical or flat database? And a RDBMS work as a network or hierarchical? Come on. That stuff was part of college textbooks.

She might have a better argument were she to claim storing flat records in a relational database isn't exploiting the features. It's true, but but it won't sway anyone else's minds.

If she wanted to make a claim of absurdity, she could carry the flag others have taken up about performance issues to read|write XML text; i.e. the signal::noise ratio isn't effective for what it provides. It's not going to change my mind about using XML for solutions where I find it to be appropriate, but she wouldn't sound as goofy as she sounds with this. Her [current] case means nothing. The XML cause at least has math on its (geeks&nerds: pretend I wrote "it's") side.
