That your application works for you is great, but that's the way computing was done over 15 years ago. Now the meat is in data access capability and open standards. Sure there are times when a quick fix can suffice, but its when there is a desire to get more out of your small applications and databases than was initially intended that there is a problem.
Let's say you made three "small" programs (web or otherwise) using three seperate databases. One tracks employee time on job installs out in the field, the second job time in the shop, and the third parts and material costs.
Now, your CEO comes in one day and asks for a simple way to track job cost data for the entire job, beginning to end. He also wants the data at his fingertips.
More than likely you, having three small databases and applications created at different times and probably with different mindsets, are going to have a headache trying to fit together the disparate applications and databases. Further, because you used three different databases you probably have redundant and/or conflicting data among them that you will have to sort out. (Ever spend your day wondering why one report says something different than another.)
I'm not saying an IT person would get it all correct from the beginning, but that most developers have at least been inundated with the notion of how to standardize their applications and use an extensible architecture definitely helps.
However, getting your IT department to work on your projects is a totally different issue. Usually bribery works well (especially Hostess products and beverages containing large amounts of caffeine.) - Posted by: ceegh Posted on: 05/17/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
