output caching, etc
You said:
(1.) they had to be interpreted each time a page was requested,
and (2.) you had troubles protecting your IP

(1) not necessarily true, for some time PHP has had output
caching:

Caching of output in PHP is made easier by the use of the output
buffering functions built in to PHP 4 and above.

php/".

(2) Not true at all.
Check out sourceguardian.com.
This appears to be at least as good as any java class mangler.
(or.net bytecode class mangler).

There is also a PHP compiler for .Net of course. (after all PHP is
just a language).

So who is the strawman creator?

"99% of code readabilty depends on good standards. I could
show you PHP code that would make you flip, and I could show
you Java code written so that a novice could follow it. It depends
little on the language, and more on the skill of the programmer."

It's actually very hard to create obfuscated PHP. Most programs
in C/C++ are badly architected and take considerable
refactoring to make readable.
Your "PHP code that would make you flip" is the exception that
proves the rule. Just take a look at all the free PHP CMS/CRM/
Portal and so on programs. They are all pretty easy to work on.
