... make me wonder if anybody is a serious programmer. Good, robust web systems can be developed in lots of things -- PHP, ASP, ASP.NET, Java, JSP, CGI ... the list goes on.

The most important thing is to have a programmer (or group of programmers) that follow standards and universally accepted rules of good coding (yes, that includes documentation!!!!)

The main difference between PHP/ASP scripted languages and compiled OOP solutions (like .NET) is that with the scripted pages must be interpreted each time that the page is called. Compiled solutions are only compiled once. This makes scripted solutions less efficient for larger apps.

No language lends itself to be more "readable" and "supportable" -- it all depends on how talented the programmer is, and how well the code is written. The goal shouldn't be to write a program to get something done. The goal should be to write a program that can be handed off to somebody else for long-term support.

And this includes knowing the basics of the architecture, security, data integrity, etc. Nobody should ever just "hack" a solution.
