This simple-minded view of Systems Integration is the SINGLE BIGGEST PROBLEM facing ALL IT today. You MUST choose standards for ALL levels of the application stack - right down to the OS. This MUST include the "configuration level", where SysAdmins and AppDevelopers "weave" their wares into the system. All too often, NO thought is put into this layer, and apps get installed ALL OVER THE PLACE. This causes headaches when you want to upgrade or port your applications. It also causes FAR too many "exceptions" - i.e. I have no space over there, so install over here!
