Backward Compatibility
It said the Windows release that follows Longhorn is likely to be 64-bit-only, so companies should start planning their migration now.

So that means that for the first time since PC-DOS 1.1, Microsoft is totally cutting off backward compatibility? That's huge.

The only way I can imagine Microsoft strong-arming users that way is if they're sure the users will have absolutely no alternatives left. Yeah, the consent decree is about to expire and all but still, that takes huge brass ones.

That, or they're bluffing. MS has a history of using churn to keep developers from having bandwidth to even think about anything but MS; this could be an extreme example. Seems risky, though.
