Open source provides a way out ...
for second tier players. When they can't compete any more against the big guys, they can go the open source route and take advantage of the common code base. And while their products may be crap, they often preside over a hodgepodge of valuable proprietary IP which they tend to merge into their open source product(s). And in this way, the free software codebase grows and gains defenses against competing IP claims. Thus, this process is a very valuable symbiosis between failing proprietary players and open source. They prefer to 'out' their IP rather than have it 'confiscated' by powerful industry giants.
