Postgres is widely deployed

Postgres has been the heavy duty alternative to mySQL for as long as I can remember.

Our product, a server used in a real time telecom environment (in a call processing role) uses Postges on Redhat Enterprise server.

I can't say enough good.

I personally would not run it on Windows server but I applaud the choice being made. If asked I can secure it behind a firewall as long as postgres is secure because that is the only port I would open (5432 by default)!

People are so scared of MS products but with correct administration most security risks can be mitigated behind a real firewall (PIX, Checkpoint or Netscreen). God help you if you don't have an internal DMZ Zone.

While I am ranting I am really getting tired of every thread turning into an MS bashing volley. It's pedantic and a waste of energy, Microsoft has a place in my network and in most of yours I assume.

The individual that commented on a Media Player is mistaken. MP does not install on W2k or Server 2003 by default. It's kinda handy to have a web browser on servers for updates. My admins have a brain and have never introduced unwanted applications via a server based web browser. We test all patches and updates on a test server before deployment.
