(2) Qick-and-Dirty "Hobbyist" implementations can serve as Proof-Of-Concept demos for more "Important-Production" implementations (with suitable Application Isolation and Firewalling).

As you point out yourself, you probably CAN tell when your DB is running on a Windows Server... because its got so many inappropriate ports Open to Hacker attacks. I strongly agree with you about running your DB Server on an isolated and reliable machine.
