One thing you don't mention is hot swap ability
I have been building my own USB/eSATA external drives the past year using the Antec MX-1 which I like because it has the same type of fan as a graphics card that moves air through the case silently. I get them from Newegg for $50. They do well what need them to do (use them for DVR's and permanent drives for PC's) but the pc's I have don't recognize the drive except if it's present at boot. For systems that need to be easily swapped out, for example users who swap out a backup storage unit every friday, I use www.high-rely.com, they make eSATA controller cards and media trays that can hot swap the eSATA drives.

I'm curious to know if the eSATA ports built-in to new pc's let you add drives without rebooting.
