CDs aren't really lossless either.
Part of the reason, from what I understand, that Apple's Lossless
Codec is so nice and can be called "lossless" even though it
technically is lossy, is because the lossy portion is targeting
background noise, the in-between ranges that even the high-
quality speakers and headphones don't pick up anyways, and the
ghost sounds (resonations) that are naturally added back by the
speakers on their own.

On the other hand, while using a program like GarageBand
(playing multiple streams at 48000 each), I nearly cry when I
hear the reduction in sound quality when it's all compressed into
a 44100 file (which is standard for CD). So if you think you get
the best sound quality from CDs, then you should also note the
loss of quality from the original recordings.

I find that the reduction in quality from Apple's codec as
opposed to AIFF or WAV format is insignificant when I hear the
sound-quality lost from an original recording going to CD. It's
worth it to me to pay a dollar per song, own it legally, and
preserve nearly the same amount of sound quality as a CD. Oh,
and I dont have to pay 14.99 for a full CD either when I only
want one or two songs... did I already mention that.

I do agree with you on the fair usage thing though. It sucks to
have to go into each song and change a few lines so that you
can play it when and where you want. If Apple wanted to keep
the music more convenient, instead of locking people out of
their music, just putting a tag in the files to show ownership
would be just fine. Then if P2P sharing got to be too crazy, they
could track the song back to the original owner and work out a
deal with them for group licensing or something.

I do wedding videos for a living and would love to pay for a song
in bulk. I would readily add the cost of each song onto each
DVD requested by my customers. My customers wouldn't cry
about having to pay an extra 3 to 5 per DVD. The process would
be a lot easier for me as well. Lisence a song for 5 machines for
a dollar and $1 dollar for every five machines after that.
