Apple's codec
"Apple's codec does an excellent job of
preserving sound quality as well."
You might want to add: "for a lossy codec" to the end of that sentence.
Just because the difference between lossless and 128k isn't noticeable through a pair of earbuds, does not mean that the difference no longer exists.
As far as I'm concerned, online stores are a convenient way to get music onto a crappy-sounding MP3 player (kinda like $2 ringtones for cellphones); and like every other market, convenience costs extra. So long as the buyer understands from the beginning, what he/she is giving up in exchange for that extra convenience, no problem.
The problem that I do have however, is how the music industry is trying to force everyone into giving up their sound quality expectations and fair-use rights, just so they can make it difficult for you to download an illegal copy of a song that you didn't like well enough to go out and buy in the first place.
It'd be like if 99% of the shelf-space in all bookstores was filled with soft-cover, abridged editions, when what you really wanted was the unabridged, hardcover version.
