After all, political operatives could, under this system "rent" cards for voting purposes. The cards can even be stolen and with the proper official cooperation, forged. Furthermore, Estonia is still trusting a computer program to insure the secrecy of the vote.
Admittedly, absentee ballots have the same problems (which I suspect is why operatives like them so much), which is why I don't like to vote absentee unless absolutely necessary and why I'm opposed to purely mail-in elections.
Where election officials are squeaky clean, secrecy is less of an issue (honest people keep confidences), but not all election officials are so trustworthy. ID cards are OK for in-person voting (at least you can look at the picture), but extremely problematic for verifying absentee voters. - Posted by: John L.
