Felt the same way about MS DOS 5
I was a happy user of MS-DOS 5 on my Intel 386 computer and I was not much interested in the new 32-bit '386 enhanced' capabilities of the upcoming windows 3.0. My word processor was Wordperfect 5.1 and spreadsheet was Lotus 123 with WYSIWYG. Then Windows 3.0 appeared and it was a must-have because it opened up so many more application capabilities with its GUI and large 32-bit virtual memory space. Of course, Microsoft was the first to the party with Excel and MS Word 2 for 'Windows' and Lotus and Wordperfect never recovered.

Now, we are using 32-bit Windows XP and the new 64-bit hardware doesn't seem like a requirement. The 'new' 64-bit Windows XP opens up some memory but doesn't really do anything with it and is otherwise identical to the 32-bit Windows XP. Microsoft has become like Lotus and Wordperfect were, happy to feed off of the past and reluctant to do anything much new.

The window of opportunity has been thrown open for a new software player to come out with with new software that actually does something with the incredible capabilities now on desktops in the form of powerful 64-bit processors and multi-GB memory. Maybe that will be a Windows application or maybe a new platform entirely. Maybe it will be some american entrepreneurs or, more likely now, european or Indian. Microsoft is dozing quietly...don't disturb their slumbers...
