Regarding what a business might pick?
Let?s presume that your business is a ASP (Application Service Provider) and you will have multiple servers doing the job in some colo. In this instance, you may have multiple versions of Windows 2003 or Linux (RHEL, SuSE, etc.) running your application, which will lower your cost of doing business (providing some service, thus reducing the staffing needs of some SMB or even a major company like Cingular)? If all you know is Windows, that may be your comfort zone, but does it lower your cost of operations?

In the case of a LAN for some company, say a SMB, is it more cost effective to have a package that provides pies of services out of the box (Mail, web, etc.) as part of the package (be it RHEL, CentOS, SuSE/Novell) or does it make more sense to go with a Windows server, Exchange, etc. Both have costs and it depends on your business model, what is being offered and what you are familiar with (as well as what you are trying to do).

You make the argument of employment but automation, be it through Windows or Linux, will reduce you needs in headcount. If you have a task that you have a bunch of people doing and you can automate it so that only 1 person is needed to do it (either by scripting with VBScript or Perl, for example, or with some application with RHEL or Windows 2003), you will still cut your staff so it does not help with jobs. As to skills, many Linux/Unix people are required, as a cost of doing business, to know something about Windows administration; the inverse is not always true.

If you are running a business, you are not doing it for the sake of hiring people; you are doing it to fill a need. This could be with automation via an ASP, retail (online or physical) or some other offering. If you have a specific staffing need, you fill that need. If you can automate much of it, thus reducing potential human errors, you will probably go this route and go after the profits through increased efficiency. This just means that your requirements change and some jobs become lost, doesn?t matter if it is via Windows or Linux/Unix automation.
