They are proving the point ...
That you can give the product away and STILL profit from selling only support services. In the long run this is going to put an ever tightening squeeze on companies trying to survive by selling both a software product AND the support services. Companiew with fat profit margins run into tough sledding when competitors with slim profit margins show up. Red Hat is akin to the Walmart of Software Vendors, and we all know the havoc they've wreaked on their full service competitors. In reality this is just the beginning of the contest. I'm hearing more and more rumors that Linux will soon be able to run almost all Windows apps natively, due to huge amounts of money being poured into that effort by corporations and governments and lots of help from world class universities. If that proves to be true, Novell and Red Hat will be a force on the desktop in no time.
