Knoppix is very, very neat. Doesn't work well on a 112MB machine but runs flawlessly on a 1GB machine. I encourage anyone who is even the least bit curious about Linux (whether you love it or hate it) to check it out.
It also hosted a debate on whether Linux or Windows would be the operating system of choice for businesses in the future. Some users said were predictably passionate about running their applications on open source software because of its better stability, while others remained adamant Windows had many advantages.
I don't understand why it HAS to be one or the other. Isn't the 'monoculture' what got us into this whole virus/trojan/worm mess in the first place?
Also, the whole Linux stability myth is just that, a myth. I've seen as many system quirks in Linux as I've seen in my Windows environment which is to say: not many. Both are very stable OSs when administered properly, both can be unstable when running on cheap hardware with questionable system settings/server processes.
And several people were doing just that by dressing up in giant penguin costumes to get the message out.
Ugh, this is the only major problem I have with Linux: a lot of the people representing it are complete nut jobs. I would love to make it through one piece of Linux documentation without seeing some snide remark about "the OTHER operating system". However, if this is the biggest problem with Linux, I would say that is a testament to Linux, not an insult.
One developer claimed Debian was a better choice for mission-critical applications than rival commercial distributions, as the lack of commercial pressures meant for better code.
What a ridiculous thing to say. Yet another example of the zealotry found within many Linux supporters. People like that do not help push Linux into the workplace. - Posted by: NonZealot Posted on: 03/14/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
