UNIX and Linux
In the beginning, Mr. Ritchie created the A,B and C languages. From C, he created UNIX. The "original" UNIX had conventions on what directories were named, and what was located in each. Most UNIXs followed the convention (/bin, /usr, /var, /etc) - however, different UNIXs placed their files in different places and named them different things - this is the "fork" - equivilent entities (semantics) but very different forms (syntax). The /etc/rc.d files in Solaris are functionally the same as the /sbin/rc.d files in HP-UX. The /etc/fstab file in HP-UX (and MOST UNIXs) is functionally the same as the /etc/vfstab file in Solaris. These "small" differences in UNIXs drove people crazy, so UNIX popularity did not grow very fast.

I had hoped that Linux would follow BSD-like directory structure and settle on names and syntax for system files - but alas, MORE forking was forthcomming. I can see only slight differences between Mandrake and Red Hat and SuSE - but Debian is like a distant cousin. Debian shouldn't be called "Linux", it should be called Debnix or something that would distance it from most Linux distros. As I said before, give me a Thesaurus and I'll give you something "annoyingly different" yet functionally the same.
