With Linux at their heels, they were also desperate to get this out.
They had to move to limit the growth of Desktop Linux as much as possible. But, it won't be much more than Windows Server 2003 dressed up with a new graphics library that also will run on XP. We will probably never see the dream that Longhorn was to be. By that time there will be XP SP3, and most will just download the graphics library and call it good. Still, they are leaving a big opening for Desktop Linux at corporations and governments.
