Then why upgrade
"By the time Longyarn comes out, there won't be any new features left."

This is the dilemma of Microsoft. They can wait and deliver a lot of new functionaliyt making it worth wile to upgrade, or they can get something out the door quickly. Whatever they do they are in trouble.

If they settle for a simple product, how do you get existing users to upgrade. Even today, 3 years after the releas of XP, there are lots of people that havn't upgraded from windows 2000 or even NT4.

As of NT4 and later Microsoft products most of the needs for the ordinary desktop user are cared for. The only thing that makes people upgrade is when products gets end of lifed an thus out of support.

If Microsoft adds lots of new features, the training costs for an upgrade will rise. And as the upgrade will not do anything to promote your business it will add to the TCO.

At the same time Linux grows stronger. Linux will typically adopt to be interoperable with existing systems. It will incorparate a lot of the features promised for the original longhorn long before we see them in windows. I'm thinking of svg based rendering engines, databaslike transactional file systems, mandatory access control,... Some of it allready in existing, some of it very likely to show up in the next generation of Linux distros in a very near future.

Then we have Apple that also grows.

The time when Microsoft could expand into new markets without competition have already ended. But the greatest problem for Microsoft is probably Microsoft, not Linux or Apple.
