With Linux at their heels, they don't have much room for error.
They have to get the next wave of lock-in technology out as soon as possible before too many corporations and governments switch desktops. Linux and OpenOffice with a critical mass on the desktop will mean a small fraction of the profits they enjoy right now. They will have to remain compatible with old applications. They will have to support old hardware. They will have to make trade-offs on security. They are between a rock and a hard place here. Fun to watch the boys squirm.
