GPL forces nothing on you...

I know you know this: GPL only forces code back into the distribution channel if YOU SELL YOUR MODIFICATIONS. You can always modify Linux or any other app to your hearts content for in-house use. If you SELL THE SOFTWARE, the code must be re-distributed. After all, you are also leveraging your modified app by using the code put in by all those other developers. ONLY GREEDY people and companies want to TAKE OTHERS CODE and, with a minor change, call it ALL THEIR OWN and make all the profits for themselves.

GPL is the way to go to ensure no one makes money off the sweat and tears of others labors, without everyone having a chance at the pie (or a piece of it). I mean really, if you want to develop the next killer app while employed by MS (not saying you are, this is just a hypothetical), and then let MS fire you and get to sell and keep your app, that is up to you. GPL protects you from this.
