New machines full of 'crapware' ...
... often run poorly and, despite what MS says, once the crapware is gone, even 1GB is a little lite (like running XP with 256MB -- it is OKAY but not "fast").

With 2GB or more, Vista runs very well on any new machine. Still there is no compelling reason to buy Vista, shrink-wrapped. Choose Vista when you buy your next machine. No need to do so any sooner than that.

As for your teenage son, the BEST reason to have Vista with UAC turned on is to prevent some malware from slipping in unnoticed. On XP, malware can slip in very easily because it will not prompt you before installing any code.
