Thing is...
On Linux, UNIX and OSX you're asked once and only once per installation process no matter how many apps you happen to install . This is how rights escalation is done in a non intrusive way that works as expected.

Having to go through rights escalation repeatedly and often to install apps from a single DVD is plain nuts. Hell, I've even had to escalate to put a README.TXT file in during installation. I expect because some dim blub at MS thought that one could install malware by copying a text file from a known source. Theoretically possible but not very likely given the source was an Adobe DVD.

Of course, with MS getting into the (very) low end of the game played by Photoshop perhaps MS considers anything Adobe to be a potential security hazard. happy

The point here isn't that rights escalation is a bad thing, it isn't. The way MS has implemented it is a bad thing. A horrible thing, in fact.

Oh, to make matters worse you have to escalate again to change file permissions to allow updates, including Microsoft's own, to install because Vista has decided that file permissions should be locked down. Any more locked down and it would be completely useless.

So why is it that rights escalation is so much easier in 'Nix land?

Could it be architecture, the 30+ years of it that Softies just love to dump on, that separates userland and systemland so that the twain never meet?

Rather than the dogs breakfast architecture of Windows that not only lets the twain meet but also encourages it to meet, date, have offspring with the result being malware?

Nahhh, can't be something as simple as that could it?
