Just to clarify...
Because I really don't know. I would assume that certain system calls would require administrator permissions even if the software as a whole can be installed or removed under user (not admin) credentials. Is this correct?

I've often thought that the process for installing software on Windows was a bit arbitrary. Some programs like Google Earth and DarkRoom install without needing admin credentials, while iTunes cannot. It's hard for me to imagine what iTunes does that makes it so dangerous, but then again, that's why I'm asking.

Some Linux and Mac folks here love to pick on UAC, or really anything MS does that annoys. Can't speak to the Mac much, but as far as Linux is concerned, every time I try to do certain tasks (like add software through the package manager) I have to supply admin credentials. It's not that much different than Vista, really, it just doesn't happen as often.
