Just rambling, but:

Your suggestion about privatizing companies might or might not solve the problem, but at least it's something different that what has not been widely tried.

IMHO, it boils down to personal choices by lotsa people, i.e. shareholders, mgt, employees. Almost like an election. One choice all seem to make is to make the largest profit at any cost.

How 'bout a slight modification of that, such as we make the largest profit we can while not taking actions that would not be condoned if taken by an individual.

You CAN'T have your cake and eat it too. But what is your cake? If a corporation doesn't have any social responsibility, what responsiblity do members of a society have to that corporation? Quid pro quo. Does stealing from that corporation become less reprehensible? If trade isn't based on trust, then you open up the whole system to lawlessness with no end.
