Wrong on business
We need to shed the "business is business" mentality giving free reign to all who want to make a buck any which way they can.

We live in an interdependent society with foremost responsibility to our own citizens. Every country does! "Getting into business" is a privilege granted to those advancing the wellbeing of the society. There is no business person creating wealth and prosperity as an entity to whom we owe such a gratitude we forego their responsibility to the society. We provide banks and lending institutions funded by society's wealth, means for distributing products and services, protection for exclusivity, and the consumer. It is the corporations and wealthy individuals that owe the society that gave them their opportunity. Gates didn't create anything we already didn't have. The world could have taken a different path and we all could be sitting by a Mac or Unix driven box. We had Lotus 123 and WordPerfect. Was Gates the only one who could advance technology? As I recall he bought out many who did.

Does Microsoft owe the society, US in this case, anything? Damn right he does. And what's wrong about producing here in the US and exporting abroad! Sony has no problem exporting to the US and taking the profits out of the country. It is not an American firm and has no allegiance to the US other than developing and protecting its means to derive profits from this market. But we can protect ourselves from predatory marketing; flood the market with cheap product until there is no competition, then raise prices. Anyone bought cheap Sony products lately?! Domestic and foreign medical firms enjoy our patent protection to charge whatever they want - more than what they charge elsewhere. A thought - what rights do foreign firms have to market their product or services in our society? Other than an invitation by us, or a particular trade agreement? If our corporations have the need to move abroad - then do so, lock, stock and barrel. Just don't expect this market to support you - banks, legislation, access to market.

Unfortunately, we are perpetuating a downward spiraling economy that must be fed with ever-cheaper products to meet our diminishing purchasing power; unemployment and social security only buys so much.

As to distribution of wealth - how many homes, cars and clothing can Gates consume. How many restaurants can he eat in? Distributing the wealth will generate much more demand for goods and services. For those who don't like it - find a society that suits you better. Just remember, with your move you lose the privileges afforded its citizens including right to conduct business. You forfeit your responsibility, you forfeit your privilege.

About off-shoring; a Canadian cannot cross the border to work and pay taxes in US for the work performed! Yet the same person is allowed to work for the company serving US market from abroad. I always though one needs a Visa to work in the States. Products and services imported to the States require customs declaration. Funds exported require a declaration to the Feds. Are there no controls anymore?
