Isn't this the same story we have heard before?
You say that in the corporate world, Vista may not do as well due to apps needing to be updated, but we update our apps fairly regularly already. Home users may stay with Quicken 98 or Office 2000 forever, but we tend to keep our systems and software up to date as a matter of policy. For example, most of our users are currently on Office 2003, but we will soon move everyone to Office 07, system wide, although I am recommending that we at least evaluate Open Office before spending the money.

Regarding in house developed software, we tend to avoid that whenever possible. Someone develops a program in house that the operation comes to depend on, then that person moves on and leaves us without support. Much better to use canned software and develop procedures in house. The last company I worked for switched to a new accounting system, and requested changes to the software. The vendor offered to do custom programming for us, but our company instead insisted that the changes be made standard. The changes were useful to other customers as well, but the main issue was that we did not want to be put in the situation where each new update would break our custom mods and require further programming support. Since we were the software provider's largest customer, they did it our way. Even small businesses benefit from this philosophy.

Based on this, our move to Vista has been relatively simple. While we will not try to upgrade existing, functioning machines, we already are using Vista for new installs. Careful testing and planning have made the transition a non-event. Waiting for the next OS in 2010 or so is not an option when we have machines reaching end-of-life every year.
