Perhaps you should consider reading the article.
Of course Microsoft will retire XP at some point, no software is supported forever. The article did state that Microsoft supports business software for 10 years, and plans to continue XP support and updates until 2014. It was the application vendors that were mentioned as dropping support for XP in a couple of years, not Microsoft.

Where do you get the idea of multi-million $ upgrades? In the corporate world, we usually replace our OSs when we replace computers. Buying a computer with Vista costs no more than buying one with XP. Vista works on our networks just like XP and runs our apps just like XP, so no difference there. Vista is more secure than XP, so should require less support. Vista will support newer hardware and software, also a plus.

Speaking as an IT professional, I see no advantages in staying with XP. I do still have a few users on software (Autocad, for example) that we are not yet ready to move to Vista, but for most everyone else, I will use Vista for all new installs. I also am currently prepping several Linux desktops for use on our network. Linux won't run everything that we use, but will be sufficient for many of our users. Between Vista and Linux, I see little future for XP.
