The best course of action would have been for Microsoft to get pressured into making the Office XP version of DOC a binary ISO standard.

Instead, as you said, we got another B.S. XML solution. Files which, incidentally, are then compressed to save space.

What happens when you compress a file? Yes, you guessed it. It becomes a binary file.
