Bad analogy, I think. The car wouldn't be open, but the factory would. You'd still have to pay someone to create your car or house, or learn how to DIY. In software, GIMP is free but you'd have to pay an artist to create your image file, or DIY.

Obviously there is an ROI, otherwise the software would not be available. As it is, each version of Linux has several thousand packages. Simple math suggests the total number of packages for all current versions of Linux dwarfs the total number of packages available for all current versions of Windows.
