Foot in the Door
Personally, I think Microsoft is getting (or trying to get) a foot in the door of developing nations. Think back when you were in school, when Apple donated so many computers to schools and you may well have used one. When you graduated the first computer you probably thought about buying was an Apple. Because you were already familiar with it. You knew how to use it and what all it could do.

Now look at the hundreds of millions of people that could be swayed to Windows just because of a Windows OLPC. The Windows sales alone could be staggering not to mention the sales of other MS software applications. It's an investment in the future by Microsoft. Whether or not it pays off only time will tell, but if I were running Microsoft, I would go this route.
