Bad move? Perhaps, but
Negroponte did face the fact that his pet project was going nowhere fast and out of desperation was forced to accept help from the evil MS empire. I don't believe that making OLPC XP compatible will increase the price significantly. The original $100 target was pie-in-the-sky to begin with and the final cost had nowhere to go but up anyway.
The only people ticked off about this are Linux purists and MS haters They saw the project as a way to put anything but Windows out in the world in a big way fast, but it takes money, a LOT of it to do this and apparently the cash isn't available. Project organizers are now appealing to the public to purchase their machines for donation to countries unwilling or unable to buy them. This doesn't bode well for the future of OLPC. Three million orders on hand? I don't believe it. If there were, Negroponte would be shouting it from the rooftop. So far, most of what we're hearing from OLPC is smoke and mirrors.
