FUD
No, having MS windows on it isn’t great, it increased the cost by %25 for starters !?!?!? How does this help get the OLPC into the hands of the kids that need it? At this point I don’t have high hopes for this project. I think Negroponte has sold out.

Loverock Davidson said: “The variety of applications alone for them has just increased ten fold.”

Ummmm, that just doesn’t compute you are either not very smart or just spreading FUD. How many of MS’s centric bloatware applications do you think you will be able to run on this limited platform? MS or other companies will need to pair down their apps to allow them to run on it. Since the majority of these windows software companies are worried about getting there apps supported on MS Vista I doubt that many are going to invest the time and $$ in getting their apps ported to the OLPC platform. There isn’t any incentive in it for them. Most likely MS get a few of their apps running on OLPC and also twist the arms of a few “partners” to get a few things running on the OLPC. However, once that is done don’t expect any future improvements or bug smashing. They will then probably spin the project as a failure a few years down the line because it can’t run Vista apps. More FUD to come.

FOSS apps in general, are more efficiently coded and contain less bloat (doesn’t include OpenOffice). Many FOSS developers also don’t have the same drivers (mainly $$) that corporations’ have.

Loverock Davidson said: “Now millions of kids all over the world will be able to run compatible applications and share documents with one another.”

MORE FUD: The non-MS version of the OLPC already has this capability and doesn’t come at a high cost or have the users run the risk of MS coming down on them for using pirated software. That is the only choice (pirated MS software or FOSS software) for a lot of people, especially the non-OLPC users, in 3rd world countries. Items generated with FOSS software are more easily shared across platforms as you are not locked into MS formats. The only offer from MS that I have heard about was low cost version of XP. I haven’t heard anything about low cost MS Office software for the OLPC.
